Who We Are
Founded in 1961 by Simon Lukos as Eastern Aluminum in Watertown, Connecticut, Eastern Awning Systems initially operated as a wholesale distributor and retailer of aluminum awnings, siding, doors, and replacement windows. Over the years, the company expanded its offerings to meet the evolving needs of customers, leading to significant growth. In 1975, Stephen Lukos, Simon’s son, took over the business, and in the early 1980s, Eastern began offering fabric awnings on a retail basis.
A Shift to Innovation
In 1985, frustrated with the poor quality and service of European retractable awning manufacturers, Stephen saw an opportunity in lateral arm retractable awnings. He chose to discontinue the retail business and shifted focus to wholesale manufacturing and distribution, establishing Eastern as a leader in the retractable awning industry. With a strong emphasis on innovation and attention to detail, Eastern developed groundbreaking designs that set new standards in quality. Stephen’s forward-thinking approach earned him five U.S. patents and numerous international patents, including the ingenious urethane shoulder joint used in the Sunflexx awning to prevent damage to the lateral arms.
Expansion and Growth
By 1996, Eastern Awning Systems reached a new milestone with the opening of a state-of-the-art 37,000 square-foot manufacturing facility. This expansion allowed Eastern to broaden its product range, including the introduction of the more affordable SunScape lateral arm awning and a roll-down front rail shade curtain for the Sunflexx model. This new facility reinforced the company’s ability to meet increasing demand and continue delivering high-quality, innovative products.
